Subject: [13401] Ultralente and Humalog
Hi, George,
My name is Barb (Type 1 for 12 years) and I have been reading the list
for a few weeks now. I have been frustrated lately with roller coaster
bgs. My doctor has been trying different regimines on me. To make this
short I noticed that you are taking Ultralente and Humalog which is what
I am taking. I take 11units of Ultralente and 3-4 units of Humalog at
7:30am, 4 units of Humalog at noon and 10 units of Ultralente and 4
units of Humalog at 6:30 pm. I just started splitting the Ultralente
two days ago which has greatly improved things (I was doing 21 units at
8:30pm). My daytime bgs are all below 130 . However, from 10:30pm until
I wake up at 6:00am my numbers make it into the mid 300s which will
cause me to take 8-9 units of Humalog at 7:30am to correct. Is there
anything that you could suggest to help the middle of the night numbers?
Do I need to give it a few more days to let it all kick in?
Could you give me an idea of what you do and how your am numbers are. I
know we all differ but I am just curious. Any advise would be
appreciated.
Also, can you tell my why I never see my messages on the list? I reply
to the list but have never seen my message.
Thanks,
Barb

Helena,
I just recently started using Diabetes Works. So far I really like it.
The nice thing is that I was having a little trouble calibrating the
program and called for technical assistance. I got Dr. Stanton who was
very helpful (and nice). I was on the phone with him for quite awhile
and left the conversation with a more enlighted view on what it takes to
get control. You can order the software through www.diabetesonline.com.
Hope it helps!!!

Rick,
Thanks for the reply. Here is a good example of why H is scarring me.
Tonight I came home - checked my BG and was 300!!! I did 7 units of H
at 5:00pm- waited 15 minutes and ate a lousy egg salad sandwich and
glass of milk. I felt funny at about 6:00 - checked my BG - it was 88.
Of course I freaked out - had a glass of OJ and 3 glucose tabs - did my
BG every 10 minutes till it finally started going up. Now it is 8:00 pm
and my BG is 289. I think I absorb my food slower than normal people.
I am waiting for my Dietician to give me some figures on when to eat and
when to inject H. I might have to inject 30 minutes after I eat or
something. I will give it a few more weeks and then I have to give up.
My control was much better with the R but I loose my freedom :{. I have
tried increasing my U several times and spend a whole day fighting
lows. This is the worst roller coaster I have ever known. However, I
am still hanging in there - I just don't want to end up with
complications from bad control. (
Back to redesigning Barbs regime
.)

Carla,
I have been on Ultralente and Humalog for a few months now. I have been
frustrated for the same reasons as you. My H would quit working before
my food would. I have been working closely with my dietician and she
had me start doing my H differently.
I was taking my H right before my meal but what would happen is that the
H would start working within 30-45 minutes but my meal still wasn't
digested by then so I would start going low and then 3 hours later I
would be high.
My dietician suggested that I change my timing and take the H 30 minutes
after I eat my meal and see if that helps with the timing. I have been
doing this for 3 days now and I do see better control.
I am still trying to make the Ultralente work - but I am not stable. 2
days I run higher and 1 day I run lower and so on and so on. If I don't
get the UL right soon I will have to try Lente again.
I, too, am testing much to much since I have been on the H. It works
very quickly for me and doesn't take much. The other day I was 300 - I
took 7u of H to cover BS and Food and 45 minutes later I was 88. This
is why I am waiting 30 minutes after eating to take it.
The Humalog is so new that no one (not even my doctor) know as much as I
wish they did about it.
I joined this list and it has helped me alot. Hang in there - you are
not alone.

Dr. Stanton:
You have my permission to use my posts and my real name. Your program,
along with our 2 hour conversation, DID help me tremendously in my
pursuit for knowledge. I am still fighting for good control but it keeps
getting a little better each week. I don't want to give up on ultralente
but will if I don't see better results soon. Then I will try Lente. I
am now using 18u Ultralente (6:00am) and 9u Ultralente (6:00pm) Humalog
on a sliding scale 3 times a day. The UL works one day, over-works
another day, and doesn't work on a different day. I think I need to do
more in am and less in pm (that's what I am going to try next). Any
suggestions are always welcome. I have stopped the list group for a
short time (the posts were getting overwhelming) but will return to it
soon. Please let me know when I am quoted so that I can go to your web
site and read.
(Hey - will I get royalties? (HA HA))
Thanks
